Dr. Leke Pitan graduated medical school from the University of Ibadan and subsequently obtained a master’s degree in public health from Lagos State University. Dr. Pitan has had a distinguished career in private medical practice and in public service. He was an Honorable Commissioner for Health in Lagos State where he instituted several novel and transformational changes in the health sector which served as a model for the rest of the States in Nigeria.

He also later served as an Honorable Commissioner for Education where he also conducted transformation of the sector with aggressive infrastructural improvement of Lagos State Public educational facilities. The result can be seen in the great transformation of Lagos public schools today as several private sector organizations have also been involved by adopting public schools for physical transformation. He established the inclusive education system in Lagos State, whereby physically challenged students and other students were schooled in the same classrooms contrary to the past practice of separation before his term.

Dr. Pitan was an active student advocate and served as National President, National Union of Lagos State Students, NULASS (1981 to 1982) and President of Lagos State Students Association of University of Ibadan, Oyo State. He belongs to several professional organizations including Nigerian Institute of Management, Guild of Medical Doctors, Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria. He was also elected Governing Council member for Nigeria at the IHF 34 World Hospital Congress held in Nice, France, in 2005, for a six-year (2005-2011) term of office. He is also a member of the IHF Executive and Audit and Finance Committees. He has numerous awards including, National Merit Award Winner, Nigeria Medical Association (2005) and the General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria.
